Sydney Gets Serious Hail
Hail is not a rare event in this city. The April 1999 Sydney hailstorm remains Australia's costliest insured natural disaster of its kind, and the storm that crossed Sydney on 20 December 2018 dropped hailstones up to eight centimetres across, generating around 25,000 insurance claims — roughly three quarters of them for motor vehicles — and more than $125 million in insured losses. Berowra, Cabramatta and parts of Surry Hills were among the worst hit.
Those storms are outliers, but smaller hail rolls across the basin most seasons, producing exactly what PDR was designed for: many small, shallow dents in unbroken paint.
Fifteen Years of Sydney Storm Seasons
Sunny's has worked through every Sydney storm season since 2010, including the December 2018 event. That matters for hail more than for any other kind of dent, because hail is the job where experience shows up as judgement rather than technique: how many dents a panel can take before paintless repair stops being the sensible option, which roof sections can be reached without dropping the lining, and when a car is genuinely better off going through a claim.
It also matters for capacity. After a major storm, everybody's diary fills within days, and knowing roughly how long a given car will take is the difference between a realistic booking and an optimistic one that runs a week late.
Severe thunderstorms are concentrated in the warmer half of the year. The Bureau of Meteorology puts it plainly: most Australian thunderstorms form in the warm season, September through to March. Search demand follows the same curve almost exactly — nationally, searches for hail damage car repair run at their lowest through June and July and peak across October and November, when they can be six to nine times the winter figure.
What that means practically is that the quiet months are the right time to deal with damage from last season, and the storm months are when capacity disappears fastest. If your car was marked in an earlier storm and you have been putting the repair off, winter and early spring are when a paintless repairer can usually fit you in within days rather than weeks.
Hail dents do not get worse while you wait — the metal has already moved. What can get worse is any paint that chipped at an impact point, since bare metal on a Sydney car exposed to coastal air will eventually start to corrode.

Hail damage concentrates on horizontal surfaces — bonnet, roof, boot lid — where the stones land squarely, while doors and guards often escape with far less. Before quoting, we count and map the dents panel by panel, note their depth, and check the paint for cracking at the impact points.
That last check decides the method. Smaller hail usually leaves the paint intact and is ideal for PDR; large or hard-driven stones can crack the clear coat, and those panels need traditional repair. A mix of both on one car is common.
Assessing Hail Damage
The right answer depends on the scale of the damage and your excess. As a guide:
- Light damage on one or two panels is often cheaper to pay for directly.
- Moderate damage sits near the line; the itemised quote decides it.
- Heavy, whole-car damage almost always exceeds a typical excess.
After a major storm there's a second consideration: repair capacity. When thousands of cars are damaged in one afternoon, insurer-approved repairers book out quickly, and cars can sit for weeks waiting for a slot. Paying directly for a paintless repair is often the faster path for lighter damage.
Claim or Pay Directly?
The technique is the same paintless approach used for any dent, repeated dozens of times across a panel, checking the surface under raking light as we go — hail dents are shallow and easy to miss under ordinary lighting.
Roof rails, sunroof surrounds and bonnet bracing limit rear access, so a hail job usually mixes both techniques on the same car.
How We Repair It
- Photograph the car before washing it — useful whether or not you end up claiming.
- Park undercover if you can; exposure won't worsen dents, but it can worsen chipped paint.
- Get a quote early — after a large storm, the wait for any repairer stretches quickly.
- Don't accept a write-off figure without a paintless assessment; cars are occasionally written off on panel-and-paint estimates when PDR would have fixed them for far less.

Send photos and we'll tell you. Most damage falls clearly into one of the three, and if what you have needs traditional panel and paint instead, we'll say so rather than take the booking.
